Former model and journalist Natalie Massenet founded Net-a-Porter in 2013. She was born in Los Angeles in 1965 to a journalist and model. After high school she began work in a men’s clothing shop and also began to attend UCLA. She graduated with a degree in English and then moved to Tokyo to work as a model and stylist. Massenet founded Net-a-Porter in 2000 in London. The website is designed similar to a magazine. It offers upper tier clothing at the click of a hand. She first began the business in her London apartment. The company has a discount site that was formed in 2009 called Outnet. In 2014, the site began the fashion magazine called Porter. Net-a-Porter was sold for 70 million dollars in 2010.

Massenet was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her work in fashion. She was also named the chairman of the British Fashion Council in 2013. Glamour magazine gave her the title Woman of the Year in 2013.

Lessons Learned

Always keep changing. You have to be ahead of technology and be ahead of the competition. You have to create content and visuals that are exciting to your consumers. In essence, people need to have a reason to come to your web site or you will have no traffic. Staying ahead and being visually pleasing are two very important lessons I have learned in the ecommerce world.
