Alan Schaaf began his business, Imgur, from his Ohio University dorm room in 2009. He purchased the domain name for seven dollars and was financed by friends and family. Imgur is a meme and image-hosting site that now has monthly visitors who upload well over 1.5 million images daily.

It was launched from the Reddit community and in 2010 Schaaf was awarded the Reddit All Around Hero. It is estimated that in 2014, one hundred million people visited the site monthly.

The company now operates from San Francisco and in 2011 took 40 million from venture capital funding. The additional funding will be used for the next platform of company expansion. Lars Dalgaard of Andressen Horowitz will come aboard to lead that phase. The 2013 addition of a mobile app has increased the company’s credibility and presence as a meme generator tool.

Lessons Learned

Having built this company from scratch and the fact I never worked anywhere else since graduating from Ohio University has taught me many lessons. I think the greatest lessons deal with when to employ and who to employ. I have learned to listen to the people around and me and to go with my gut feeling. I have also learned that expanding the team slowly is the best way to go. Getting the right people in newly created positions is paramount to our success at Imgur.

Inspiring Quotes

You’ll be fine. You’re 25. Feeling unsure and lost is part of your path. Don’t avoid it. See what those feelings are showing you and use it. Take a breath. You’ll be okay. Even if you don’t feel okay all the time.

Louis CK

I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy. Because they know what it’s like to feel absolutely worthless and they don’t want anybody else to feel like that.
