As one of Time Magazine’s 2012, 100 Most Influential Businessmen, Ben Rattray is focused on change for the better. He is the founder and the acting CEO of an online petition site called Change.org. He started his site when he decided to challenge a fee from Bank of America.
Ben was born in Santa Barbara, California and like so many of the Silicon Valley entrepreneurs he too, attended Stanford University. While studying economics and political science he was impacted by a negative comment concerning his brother’s sexual orientation. This one remark caused him to be a force behind pursuing collective and positive actions. He also attended the London School of Economics.
In 2007, he launched Change.org from his home. The site concentrates on petitioning and changing that which needs to be focused on in today’s society. The format of Change.org has moved from a blog platform to a petition site. In May of 2013, Rattray noted that Omidyar Network had invested 15 million in Charge.org, and that the company now employed over 170 people in 18 countries.

One Person Can Change the World
Ben Rattray has learned that one person can make a change. His goal of Charge.org is to make the balance of power between individuals and organizations more equal. His group has fought to make people aware of female genital mutilation, biotech plant negligence, release of wrongly imprisoned people, and support for children with cancer among many other causes. His first successful petition came from a woman from South Africa named Ndumie Funda. It was a petition against corrective rape (when men rape women to straighten their behavior out or to punish them) and it generated over 170,000 signatures. The petition brought attention to the practice and as a consequence of the press generated the South African government formed a panel to investigate the practice. As of 2014, Over 200 million people have joined Ben Rattray at Change.org to help make changes.
