Louis Biron is an entrepreneur who currently owns and operates One Horn Transportation, a trucking and logistics company based in Wayne, New Jersey.
Louis's wife, Cheryl Biron, is President of the company, and Cheryl and Louis have worked together to grow the company 10 fold in just 3 years. With a background in engineering, Louis earned his B.Eng. at McGill University in Canada, and he received his MS in computer design at the University of Montreal, and finally got his MBA at HEC in France.
Louis met his future bride and business partner when she visited France’s HEC College in an exchange program while she attended the Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia.
After migrating to the US, Louis Biron ran the Brink’s New York Ground Armored and US Air Freight Divisions, utilizing an extensive fleet of trucks as well as air cargo assets.
After looking at 45 businesses in the trucking and logistics industry, Louie, with his wife Cheryl, bought the basic framework of One Horn Transportation from another entrepreneur wanting to exit the business.
One Horn Transportation is, for all intents and purposes, a virtual business and does not own any trucking equipment. The company only has one employee.
They have independent agents that have relationships with shippers that use One Horn’s software and trading platform. That allows them to organize the shipments, track the trucks and make contracts with carriers. They have more than 40,000 carriers in their database.
The One Horn system keeps track of all the transactions, produces billing, collects money from the shippers, pays the agents, pays the carriers and “keeps a little money for One Horn.”
Louis has developed that proprietary software system that enables One Horn Transportation to streamline and automate the operation to better serve their customers and to support their network of agents.
Companies and Investments
Just being a business owner does not make you a real entrepreneur.
Just being a business owner does not make you a real entrepreneur; particularly if you are just running a business like it was a job. Before our eyes were opened by Entrepreneurs’ Organization, that’s what we were.
You must be accelerating your business
We learned the lesson that you must start thinking; start doing things and start improving. You must always be accelerating your business, coming up with new ideas. Now, barely a week goes by when we don’t think of something to add to streamline our process and our plan. We now hold regular corporate strategy meetings and have mapped out how to grow another 10 fold past the 10 fold we have already grown in the last 3 years.
Decide what you are.
We made the decision that our company is a boutique brokerage firm, so we want a select number of agents. We don’t want too many agents until we are ready to grow to that point.
Right now, we are trying to constantly improve our software and our system so we don’t get bogged down with paperwork. That way, our brokers can always reach us.
We now anticipate problems better, and we actually solve problems in advance-instead of waiting until we have that problem!
