Profile

Mark Pentecost founded It Works Global in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2001. The firm moved to Bradenton in 2011. It Works is a direct sales enterprise that sells body contouring wraps, health foods and personal care products. The cloth wraps promise to tighten and tone skin

Long before the founding of It Works! Global, Mark was a high school teacher and basketball coach in the small town of Allegan, Michigan. Cindy was a stay-at-home mom with their three children, a job of the utmost importance that the family took great pride in her doing. They were rich in love and filled with dreams, but struggling to make ends meet financially.

So Mark & Cindy devised a plan: an extra $500 a month, to be earned through a home-based business opportunity in the telecommunications industry. After months of evening hours dedicated to their new side business, the Pentecosts’ earnings grew far beyond the goal they had originally set.

After a few years, Mark became a top-ten earner in the company, bought the family’s freedom, and began to dream of the next big challenge: helping other families do the same. They weren’t sure how they would do it yet, but the seed had been planted for It Works! Global. Total sales in 2013 were estimated to be about $500 million.

Lessons Learned

Things started slowly. Pentecost invested $300,000 to $500,000 of his own money in the company, and he and Cindy Pentecost took out a second mortgage to keep it afloat. “We didn’t pay much in the beginning,” Pentecost says. “We didn’t have much.”

Pentecost makes sure employees stay focused on small goals to build up to big successes. He constantly reminds employees that the firm can’t do everything. “It’s really easy to get distracted,” he says. “Our no’s mean as much as our yeses.” - See more at: http://www.businessobserverfl.com/section/detail/work-it/#sthash.VZGePUmJ.dpuf

I tell people I’m a little more Jimmy Buffet than Warren Buffet. I like being laid back down here, I like being in sandals and shorts. To me it’s not how high your IQ is, it’s your grit. I call it your ‘grit-Q’, how high is your grit?’ If you’ve got that you’ll stick to it and get it through and you can be successful at this.

Mark Pentecost's Quotes

I loved reading biographies of other people that had done it and I was always trying to look out for how we could make extra money. I enjoyed teaching, I enjoyed coaching, but the income wasn’t enough to raise a family on.
