Profile

Jay Coen Gilbert is an entrepreneur originally from New York, NY. He attended Horace Mann High School, and later attended Stanford University. At Stanford, Gilbert attained a bachelor’s in East Asian studies. The first couple years following graduation were spent at McKinsey & Company, a global management-consulting firm where he worked as an analyst. He was there just short of two years, leaving his position in 1991.

In May 1993, with around $30,000 to initially invest, Gilbert and future business partner Seth Berger co-founded And 1 in Paoli, Pennsylvania. And 1 is a very distinctive basketball footwear and clothing brand. The company’s beginnings can be found on the back of napkins—scribbles of trash-talk phrases one could expect to hear when playing street ball. Gilbert was the CEO during the most significant growth periods in the mid- to late-90s, and was very hands-on with the company’s promotional material. And 1 also innovated in the retail space with the introduction of And 1 Mixtapes—street ball videos that would often turn out more fans than the apparel. In May 2005, And 1 was sold to American Sporting Goods for $250M.

Currently, he is the co-founder of B Corporation, a nonprofit seeking to change the standards to which private businesses are held. B Corporation proposes a set of rigorous standards; requiring businesses seeking certification exhibit exceptional environmental and social sustainability. Companies must also show themselves to be considerate of stakeholder interests, as opposed to having only shareholder interests in mind. There are over 1,100 Certified B Corporations as of 2015.

Lessons Learned

I determined there to be a substantial market of working class Americans who have a desire to align their purchases with their sensibilities. I’ve learned that it’s important to learn to grow and adapt, especially within the context of our businesses and economies. I’ve seen a shift in the market where people now demand, more than ever, that businesses they support are consistent with their values.
