In 1998, Chris Mittelstaedt founded the FruitGuys. By year 2000, the company was a multi-million dollar business. The San Francisco Company specializes in providing fresh fruit to American schools, homes, and places of business. His mission is to give healthy food to those venues in order to increase wellness and work productivity. FruitGuys delivers to over 6,000 businesses.
The company deals with everything from families to large corporations. Chris Mittelstaedt has been featured in PBS, CNBC, CNN, and also Bloomberg BusinessWeek. In an effort to deliver his message, he has been known to show up for his appearances in a banana suit. In 2012, the FruitGuys made the Inc. 500/5000 for five years in a roll.
The company strives to replace the junk food that currently exists in traditional vending machines. The FruitGuys have also created several programs designed to support local farmers and sustainable practices. Their GoodWorks program donates over 300,000 lbs. of fruit a year to non-profit groups. They have also partnered with the World Congress at the 2nd Annual Executive Forum on Creating a Culture of Health. Mittelstaedt is a finalist for the Entrepreneur of 2014.

I think my two lessons learned are to keep things simple and to experiment on occasion. Since you want to always improve your company, the need to experiment exists. If the company strategy is somewhat simple, but is functional, then experimenting is realistic. I began working with small farmers as an experiment and this particular test has lead to a long and special bond. Just keep the experimenting rather simple, you do not want to disrupt the workflow so much that daily taks do not get completed.
