Cheryl Biron is an entrepreneur and president and CEO of One Horn Transportation and manages the company with her husband, Louis Biron.

While attending the Wharton School of Business MBA program in Philadelphia, Biron was an exchange student at HEC Paris in France, where Louis was a graduate student also. They met and married and stayed in France for a few years, where Cheryl worked for Proctor & Gamble.

Upon returning to the US, Biron worked in marketing for Block Drug Company (now owned by Glaxo SmithKline) and Prestige Brands. During this time, Louis was working in fleet management for several large companies including Brinks in New York.

In 2004, while moving upward through their corporate careers, the Birons happened to read Thomas Stanley’s book, “The Millionaire Next Door.” Then and there they both decided that the corporate path was not the way to achieve the real success they both wanted, so they set out to start or buy a business of their own.

After looking at 45 businesses in the trucking and logistics business (his background), in 2005, Cheryl, with her husband Louis, bought the basic framework of One Horn Transportation from another entrepreneur wanting to exit the business.

After a few years, in 2007, Biron and her husband re-invented One Horn Logistics and sold all the rolling-stock. Now, the company has been remade. It is a virtual business and brokerage that does not own any trucks. This model allows the couple to avoid the overhead involved in owning trucks and insurance if business is slow.

In 2010, Cheryl and Louis moved to a total agent-based business. Under their company's umbrella, One Horn has an army of independent agents that have relationships with shippers. The agents use One Horn’s software and trading platform to organize the shipments, track the trucks and make contracts with carriers. The company currently has more than 40,000 carriers in their database.

The One Horn system keeps track of all the transactions, billing, collects money from the shippers, pays the agents, pays the carriers and, “keeps a little money for One Horn.”

One Horn has grown 10 fold in the last 3 years and plans to grow another 10 fold in the upcoming 3.

Cheryl, President & CEO, oversees sales, marketing, finance, and strategic planning for the company. Her husband, Louis has developed a proprietary software system that enables One Horn to streamline and automate operations.[1]

Lessons Learned

New Ideas Continually expose yourself to new ideas as the market changes and the economy changes.

Re-Invent Yourself Do not be afraid to re-invent your company when it is the thing to do.

Study We read everything we can that can help us run our company better, smarter and more efficient. We never ever stop learning.

Automation beats new hires See if you can automate something before you "give it away" and hire someone. Often you can write a program that will solve a problem rather than hire someone to accomplish that same task.

Have Courage Have the courage to take that leap even if you are scared. We are so glad we did not wait until we were more secure and then say “we shoulda.”

Inspiring Quotes

Wealth is more often the result of a lifestyle of hard work, perseverance, planning, and, most of all, self-discipline.

Cheryl Biron's Quotes

Working with my husband is a joy. He thinks I am smart and I know he is smart, so it works beautifully.

Cheryl Biron

My partner (husband) and I have complimentary skill-sets. He is an engineer with computer design skills and I am the marketing person and we meet well in strategy and talk about how to improve the company but the main thing is that.... we act on those ideas.
