Cenk Uygur was born in Istanbul, Turkey on March 21, 1970. In 1978, Uygur and his family moved to New Jersey. Uygur spent most of his youth in New Jersey before leaving to Pennsylvania to study management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

While attending college, Uygur actively participated in his school’s Student Activities Council representing the Turkish Students Association. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Uygur enrolled at Columbia Law School and subsequently earned a degree in law.

Immediately after earning his law degree, Uygur worked with Drinker Biddle & Reath, a law firm in Washington, D. C. It was while he was in D.C. that he was first introduced to radio. He appeared on a weekend radio show that he eventually began to co-host.

Finally, in 2002, Uygur launched The Young Turks, an online talk show focused on sharing world news on the Internet. The show immediately became a success and now airs regularly on Current TV. The show has collected more than 1,000,000,000 views on Youtube and is streamed daily online.

Uygur was presented with the “Emperor Has No Clothes Award,” alongside Ayaan Hirsi Ali, from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

Lessons Learned

People are interested in learning about most things, and when you have a passion, you can make anything a success. Networking plays a huge role in taking your company, brand, or idea to the next level. I had no idea that anything I had to say would ever elevate to the success or following that it has. If I hadn’t moved to Washington, D.C., my life wouldn’t be what it is today.

When I first started out talking about my beliefs and ideas, I was not necessarily received with the most positive response. You can’t be afraid to push for change, though, and as long as there is change that needs to be made in this world, there’s room for you to make that change.

James Dean

All contributions by corporations to any political committee or for any political purpose should be forbidden by the law.

Theodore Roosevelt

Cenk Uygur's Quotes

We have gone so long feeling powerless, that we have forgotten what our birthright is. We are born free men and women in this country. If we rise up together, we can be that again.
