Catherine Merritt is a businesswoman, mother, and entrepreneur who founded Mumzy, a crowdfunding site for moms with entrepreneurial ideas. To date, Mumzy is the first and only platform of its kind. Merritt, a mom of two, has a strong background in marketing, both of which inspired her to start her own company. With more than a decade in the marketing industry, Merritt founded Mumzy in 2014 with the intention of bringing out the innovative, entrepreneurial side of moms in a unique and beneficial way.

A Chicago native, Merritt attended Frances W. Parker School and Skidmore College, earning a bachelor’s degree in English in 2003. Since then she has held numerous jobs throughout the greater Chicago area in both PR and marketing, including as an account executive for Sanderson & Associates and Ketchum Public Relations. She is also the founder of The Chicago Foodie Blog and The Chicago Public Relations and Marketing Network. During the first months of Mumzy, Merritt kept her 9-to-5 job as the Vice President of Olson Engage, a large Chicago marketing agency.

In October 2016, Mumzy was acquired by another company. As of now, the name of the company has yet to be released.

Sources used to write this entrepreneur’s profile include the entrepreneur’s personal LinkedIn profile, and a July 2015 interview with Monica + Andy.

Lessons Learned

There is no rule about where you are supposed to find inspiration. Follow your intuition and do what feels right to you.

Be confident and play to your strengths.

Just because something isn’t easy doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done.

One of the keys to starting and running a successful business is to have a strong and dedicated work ethic.

Figure out what your vision is and go for it. This may not happen overnight, but it’ll be worth it in the end if you stay committed and true to yourself.

Finding a work-life balance isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. It may be more of a juggling act than a balance, and that’s OK.

Don’t be afraid to vocalize what you want and ask for help.

Remember to find time for yourself and that you don’t always have to put yourself last.
