When Catherine Cook and her brother, David, were growing up in New Jersey, they used to set up little libraries in their house and rent out books to their parents for a small charge. Later, when she was just 15 years old, Catherine Cook co-founded myYearbook with her brother Dave, using an investment from her other brother, Geoff. MyYearbook is an online, interactive yearbook designed as a site for high schoolers to meet new people.

From 2005-2011, Catherine and her brother grew myYearbook from 400 members in just her local high school to 32.7 million registered members. In 2011, the siblings were approached by Quepasa, a Brazilian and Mexican-based site, and myYearbook received $150 Million for their company in a merger. Catherine graduated Georgetown University in 2011, and she continues to actively grow the company she co-founded, while her brother, Geoff, acts as COO for the newly merged company, MeetMe, which aims to be the best global site to meet new people.

Lessons Learned

1. Believe that what you're working on is going to work, and ignore everyone else. As an entrepreneur, especially a young, female entrepreneur attending Georgetown University, Catherine learned quickly to tune out any voice that discouraged her from believing that her company, myYearbook, would succeed. She remembers feeling pressure to hide the fact that she was running a successful company, in order to fit in with the other kids in her class, because, "No one likes a successful, ambitious girl." Catherine tells other female entrepreneurs, from her experience, that it's important to just focus on the fact that what you're working on, your project, will work. If you believe that, it doesn't matter what anyone around you might say--your vision and your mission will be successful as long as you silence negativity and reinforce your own internal voice telling you that you're pursuing the right goal.
