Born in 1985 in Princeton, Ill, Ben Parr earned the designation of Eagle Scout in 2002 before graduating from Princeton High School in 2004. Parr attended Northwestern University, graduating with Bachelors degrees in Science in Human Culture and Political Science as well as a minor in Business Institutions.

Parr’s first venture was Aphon Inc, a video competition site for aspiring performers that failed before launch. He served as president of InNUvation, the entrepreneurship club at Northwestern and upon graduation was awarded the Kapnick Prize for work promoting entrepreneurship on campus.

Parr was hired as a writer for Mashable within months of college graduation and quickly rose through the ranks from Writer to Associate Editor to Co-Editor and finally Editor-At-Large in May 2011. During this time, Parr published more than 2,400 articles on web technologies, business and media. Parr was fired from Mashable following a disagreement over compensation in November 2011.

In 2012, Parr announced his new position as a technology and media commentator and columnist at CNET.

In 2013, Parr, Matt Schlicht and Mazy Kazerooni co-founded DominateFund, a seed stage venture capital firm that coaches startups to get attention through press, viral marketing and celebrity partnerships.

Parr’s first book, Captivology: The Science of Capturing People’s Attention, will be published by HarperCollins in March 2015.

Lessons Learned

I learned to accept failure as the first step to actual success. While one of my companies never took off, I grew as an entrepreneur and as an individual.

After the disagreement at Mashable, I kept my professional demeanor and thanked my coworkers and colleagues before moving on to the next stage of my career. Holding on to resentments is not constructive or healthy.

Inspiring Quotes

I have the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better.

Good founders bail. Great founders recruit and inspire.
