Anton Griesedieck, with his brother Franz, moved from Germany to St. Louis in 1866. The family, following the same pattern as great-grandfather Johann Heinrich Griesedieck, who had a history of making beer in Oelde-Stromberg, Westphalia.
Anton and Franz began their startup with a malt house called the Schnerr Brewery in St. Louis on 11th Street and Park Avenue. That malt house developed into many malt houses and then the A. Griesedieck & Co. Brewery, the Phoenix Brewery, and the National Brewery.
Franz’s son Henry L. and Anton’s sons Joseph and Henry continued operating the breweries after their fathers died. In 1906, the conglomerate came to be known as the Independent Breweries.

The lessons I admired and followed involve family. I was successful due to my great-grandfather and the family name continued with my ancestors. Our techniques, skills, and family unit helped to make our brewery famous. Family is important and will always be there for you.
