In 2007, Alexis Horowitz-Burdick moved to Singapore from Boulder, Colorado as a start-up consultant. Her job was to provide solutions for company directors in Asia. She then decided to start her first company, SweetSpot. It was a high-end group purchasing website. Having contacts in Singapore was quit beneficial to this start-up. Financial concerns and limitations caused her to sell after six months.
In 2011, she was ready to try again. This time she wanted to focus on an interest of hers, skin care and cosmetics. Luxola was then founded. A year later, WaveMaker Labs invested in the venture. As of 2014, the company carries over 50 brands and close to 600 different products. The Luxola warehouse is in Singapore and the group delivers to Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, and Indonesia. Delivery to Singapore is free. Alexis Horowitz-Burdick has served on several entrepreneurial panels as well as Startup Asia 2013.

I would have two pieces of advice for anyone interested in starting their own business. You should make sure you have the funding ready. You will have many things to worry about, and taking away the financial worry will relieve a lot of stress.
My second lesson is that you need to be aware of just how hard you will work on the start-up. You have to be willing to work around the clock to get the business on the ground and then to keep the team running.
